The K.Kekelidze Institute of Manuscripts of the Academy of Science of Georgia (founded in 1958)
is the most important depository of old manuscript books and historical documents in Georgia.
It safekeeps about 9000 Georgian manuscripts written and copied in the 5th-10th centuries;
there are about 4000 manuscripts in Russian, Armenian, Greek, Persian, Arabian, Syrian, Old Hebrew.
It keeps about 40000 Georgian historical documents; 102 personal archives of renowned scholars and
public figures (about 200 000 documents). Moslem fund of the Institute of Manuscripts is represented
by 3050 manuscripts belonging to the fields of science, religion and literature.
The collection of Persian documents preserved in the Institute of Manuscripts is based on the
documents accumulated in the depositories of the Georgian Historical-ethnographical Society in the
pre-revolutionary period (1917), largely purchased from private persons in Georgian families.
The collection is made up of 511 Persian documents: firmans, hocms, deeds of purchase,
arzas (petitions), with endorsements of the shah or Georgian king.
Georgian-Persian bilingual documents essentially rank among unique developments in the history of
general diplomatics. A part pf Persian-georgian bilingual documents (25 unit) are presented in the catalogue.
These documents are a part of the collections of the Georgian historical documents.
